@3 A SPRINT DOWN T.V MEMORY LANE
@1 ==============================
@2 Steve Bye
@1
Before I begin proper, I must point out that I am no expert on any of the
various subjects covered in MAG-E. I am writing this short piece because
I feel I must make an effort for Thomas as he has done for my disk mag,
* Amoszine.(And get a plug or two of course!)
So, what the hell do I write about? I confess an interest in SCI-FI and most
of the old T.V series I grew up with such as Randall And Hopkirk The Sweeney
The Professionals, Space 1999 etc. So I suppose I had better indulge in a
safe journey down memory lane and maybe jog a memory or two of series lost
and forgotten to a lot of people. Here is my top ten favourite shows of all
time.
No.10 Blakes Seven
==================
Why the hell haven't they re-run this classic show in the last few years?
Garunteed a new following if they do. Outragous, even camp at times but
great escapism and good plots.
Todays rating: No problem.
No.9 Randall And Hopkirk (Deceased)
===================================
A lot of the time, a re-run of a very old favourite you haven't seen since
you were a kid turns out to be a big dissapointment, Randall is not one of
them for me. One of the most original shows ever, the stories are still good
and apart from the first few episodes it's as good as it's always been.
Todays rating: Cool, no problem, even the BBC agree with that.
No.8 The Saint
==============
I've always liked cool dude Roger Moore, even as James Bond, but this
series really was a cut above. The plot/story lines were intriguing and fun
as well as full of action.
Todays rating: Definetly deserves a re-run.
No7 Project UFO
================
I don't remember much about it, but I know it was great and I would love to
see it again.
Todays rating: Not sure?
No.6 Land Of The Giants
=======================
Totally original and weird plot, great characters, reasonably good stories.
I even enjoyed all the recent re-runs on channel 4.
Todays rating: Looking a bit dated but will just stand the test of time.
No.5 The Professionals
======================
Second only to The Sweeney in the cop show ratings. Over the top macho
bullshit always wins the day and this takes it to the limit in places which
is all pretty tounge in cheek, brilliant.
Todays rating: Could get a cult following again.
No.4 Thunderbirds/Cpt Scarlet
=============================
I can't decide which I prefer between these two. I think I am a bit bored of
TB's as I have seen the whole series four times now. Cpt Scarlet definetly
had better Animations/ better hidden wires and superior plots, but the
charachters were not as plausible as in TB's.
Todays rating: I think Gerry's puppets need dargging into the 90's as kids
now a days don't expect to see strings on puppets. Using current technology
Thunderbirds could be a monster hit again.
No.3 Planet Of The Apes
=======================
Talk about original! this show broke the mould and it paid off. The series
was and is superb. The film versions were pretty damn naff and were just
cash-in jobs.
Todays rating: Brilliant, but don't show the films.
No.2 Mission Impossible
=======================
One of my all time favourites of all time mates, this has got to be in the
top three best ever shows from the sixties. The plots were ludicrusly
complex and unbelievable, sometimes to batman-esque proportions , but that
was the hook.
Todays rating: Would easily stand up to todays shows. The title music beats
anything in todays charts!!
No.1 The Sweeney
================
This just has to be the best EVER cop show. Hard, gritty, realistic. John
Thaw is brilliant as Inspector Reagan and Dennis Waterman doesn't do a bad
job as his side-kick. Many of the plots in The Sweeney were condemmed for
giving criminals great ideas for robberies. In fact a few copy cats were
reported. I just wished I had taped the show when it last had a full re-run.
Todays rating: No problemo, still beats any other cop show, american or
British. The flared trousers aren't a problem as they are back (ain't they?)
P.S I don't wear flares.
